Analgesics

Pain is possible after most types of dental procedures. It is more common after the removal of teeth.

We usually prescribe strong pain killers after the removal of teeth, or other types of surgery such as implants, or even deep scaling.

If you have been prescribed pain killers and:

1. There is only a little bit of pain, then you can take a non-prescription pain                     killer such as paracetamol (eg Panadol) or ibuprofen (eg Nurofen).

2. There is no pain, then there is no need to continue taking them.

If you have severe pain, you should take your pain killers as prescribed.
You could also apply a cold/ice pack to the side of your face for 20 minutes on and off. You should also rest.

If you have moderate to severe pain and you don't have any prescription pain killers, there are a few drugs or combinations available over the counter that may be of help.

1. Paracetamol 500mg (eg Panadol)
2. Paracetamol 500mg with codeine 8mg (eg Panadeine)
3. Paracetamol 500mg with codeine 15mg (eg Panadeine Extra)
4. Ibuprofen 200mg
5. Asprin 300mg
6. 1 or 2 or 3  with Ibuprofen (eg Nurofen). There are some preparations           with a combomation of paracetamol and ibuprofen).
5. Aspirin with 1 or 2 or 3.

You should confirm the dose with the pharmacist. It may be that you have health issues or are taking other drugs, which limit your choice of drugs. You should take only the recommended dose.
